Sonia Tara & Roberto Castañeda

Maestra Sonia Tara and Maestro Roberto Castañeda run their center Atipak Wasi in Pucallpa for patients and diateros, from which they frequently travel abroad (Mexico, Spain, Europe). Sonia is Colombian, Roberto is from Basque Country. Their union in medicine is bringing two worlds together: that of indigenous curanderismo of the Amazon Basin and the European strength of spirit.

Sonia has a gift of vision. Her old chair in the maloca of Rao Kano Xobo, where she was always considered as part of the family, had a carving on its back in a shape of an owl. She is, indeed, a seer. She does card readings and uses mapacho for her divination work and she never lacks in people coming to see her to get their cards read. She is a powerhouse in a medicine world, one of the matriarchal women that takes care of those seeking help and her hugs you really feel; some are tight enough to squeeze you in half, in fact, when Sonia misses your cheeky face for a while. She gives dietas and prepares maestros. Roberto, as well as her sons Andre and Jean Pol have all been prepared by her for the medicine work.

Roberto’s icaros are unlike any other singing you will have heard. He uses a lot of chanting and does a lot of praying in between, calling in archangels with blazing swords of truth and galloping celestial cavalry to defeat his adversaries (at least that’s what I feel like when charges into his battles with a customary maraca in his hand to shake the demons up). There’s no black magic curse that Roberto can’t break up, I’ve been a witnessed to it time and again.

Roberto has come to the medicine as a last resort to save himself from the life of vice. He has indulged in all sorts of bad things (I will leave this part up to him to disclose) until he found himself in the Peruvian Amazon dieting with Shipibos in the village of San Francisco. He had a premonition that Madre will cure him. After two years, however, his thousands of dollars have dwindled to nothing and he was exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally. The family of curanderos he was dieting with were to blame, milking him for all he was worth. One day Sonia was visiting San Francisco and found Roberto in a really bad shape. She recognized him from the dreams she’s been having and pulled him out. She initiated him and opened his vision with a single dieta, and since then Roberto has been working side by side Sonia accompanying her in Mexico, Spain and the rest of Europe.

Atipak Wasi is always maintained in the best possible standard. The ceremonies are outstanding and you get really well looked after. Apart from Roberto and Sonia, Andre (or Chino) and Jean Pol are often present with their instruments and there’s much beautiful music at all times. Dietas are short, one to two weeks, as Sonia has cosmic connections that advise her time is accelerated and what it used to take six months hundred years ago now takes less than a week. Sonia is also a guardian of sacred incanto stones and she has very strong connection with spirits dwelling in them. I highly praise Maestra Sonia and Don Roberto’s integrity and our enduring friendship that holds me and Rachel reassuringly in knowing we have their love and support in whatever trouble we encounter on our path.
